De Vrij, Godin and Asamoah are just the latest in a long list of deals concluded by Inter in recent years. But the Nerazzurri club intends to continue on this path, trying to hire the best players on expiry of their contract with their clubs. Tuttosport dedicates a long analysis to the Inter market, explaining what the names on which Ausilio and Marotta are aimed are, at the moment.
In defense there is a player who is perhaps more in the front row. This is the 32-year-old Belgian Jan Vertonghen of Tottenham. The central defender, left-footed – a rather important characteristic – is an element that Inter has been following for years. Already in 2016 there were some reports, as well as in the autumn of 2018: even then Vertonghen was due to expire, 30 June 2019, but Tottenham exercised the unilateral clause for the renewal until 2020. Now the ex Ajax should leave London and Inter is reasoning whether to increase the pressing. Today, Conte has only one left-handed central defender in the squad, the young Bastoni, while Skriniar, who plays on the center-left, has shown that he has difficulty adapting to that position. With Vertonghen Inter would have two left-handed to be alternated on the left and Skriniar – if it should not be sold against an offer of at least 80 million – could move to the right where Godin will still have a year more (will be 34 next February 16 ).
Another department that may need to be refreshed is that of the side lanes, in particular to the left where Asamoah has been living with knee problems for a long time and Biraghi is on loan from Fiorentina with the right of redemption set at 12 million. Inter monitors the situation of two PSG fullbacks both with an offensive vocation. To the right is the Belgian Thomas Meunier (28 years old), an old ball of Ausilio who often followed him when he was still playing in Club Brugge (until 2016); on the left instead the French Layvin Kurzawa (27), already probed last summer when he was reasoning in the substitute of Dalbert.
On Vertonghen, Meunier and Kurzawa the competition will be high, but probably less fierce than the one Inter will find on the Danish Christian Eriksen and the Belgian Dries Mertens . The first, expiring with Tottenham, is the prized name of the released 2020, a player who could leave London for several million in January (he is in the sights of Manchester United and Real Madrid). If it remains free, Inter – as well as Juventus – will make an attempt, but between hiring and commissions it will have to put a very high investment on a budget. Mertens will leave Naples at the end of the season. In May, the Belgian will turn 33, not a few, but it could be a clever graft to complete Inter's offensive division, especially if the company decides not to sit down to negotiate with Alex to purchase Alexis Sanchez.
